Behind the Scenes: New Art in Progress

It’s a long, slow process

Creating these boxes takes a lot more time and work than you’d think……

Pyrographic Boxes are a lot of work. Once I create or choose a design, I transfer the image onto the box using transfer paper. Once I get the details and shading right on the box, I burn the design into the box one dot at a time, using a wood burning tool that is basically a hot pen. Depending on the size and detail, it can take between 4 to 80 hours to complete the burning process. I once had one take several weeks. After the burns are completed, the boxes get sanded, I start the staining process. I dry sand the box 6 times for six coats, then 3 times again for the clear coats. That’s only if I have one color of stain. If I’m dealing with multiple colors it takes much longer.

These are a few examples of boxes over the years

I do take commissions as I can when I have the time

It all depends on the amount and level of detail…….
